What is SACLA?

With SPring-8-level X-rays, the intensity is insufficient to observe instantaneous motions and changes of atoms and molecules. That is why the X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility (XFEL) was devised. Laser technology is used in many fields, including DVD readers, medical devices, and welding. Its light has excellent directionality and focusability, allowing you to illuminate even small distant objects with pinpoint accuracy. If you picture a laser pointer and a flashlight, you can imagine the difference from normal light. This is because the light waves emitted one after another from a laser source are perfectly aligned. Lasers also have the characteristic (pulse property) of concentrating energy in a shorter time than normal light. By turning X-rays into a laser and creating light that combines the strengths of both, it becomes possible to capture instantaneous atomic and molecular motion, like ultra-high-speed strobe photography. SACLA is the facility that produces such light (an X-ray free electron laser). In addition, the shared-use experimental facility between SACLA and SPring-8 is a global advantage because they are on the same site. Experiments that irradiate various materials with SACLA’s powerful light and observe the changing state with SPring-8 light may reveal new phenomena never before seen by humankind. SACLA’s light holds possibilities beyond imagination.

SACLA Synchrotron Radiation

When you trace the origins of natural phenomena and life activities, many ultimately come down to how atoms and molecules are arranged and move, and even to the motion of electrons within their assemblies. If we could directly observe the arrangement and motion of atoms and molecules, and the motion of electrons, it is expected to greatly help improve our lives—for example, by elucidating the causes of intractable diseases and creating medicines, and by establishing methods to suppress substances that worsen the global environment. X-rays, familiar from hospital diagnostics, were discovered by Röntgen in 1895. Because they have a much shorter wavelength than visible light, they have been used to observe fine structures of matter at the atomic and molecular level. SPring-8 is the world’s most powerful X-ray source, but even so, its intensity is insufficient to observe instantaneous atomic and molecular motion. Lasers are light sources that emit extremely intense light. If an X-ray laser could be realized, it would be possible to observe instantaneous atomic and molecular motion. Lasers generate coherent light with aligned phase (light in which peaks align with peaks and troughs align with troughs) and are applied to various optical technologies, but it was impossible to create a short-wavelength X-ray laser as an extension of conventional laser technology. As a method to create a laser in the X-ray region, a scheme was proposed that does not use conventional light emission phenomena in matter, but instead controls and drives electrons in a high-energy accelerator and uses the light emitted from them. Because an X-ray laser is created using free electrons stripped from atoms, it is called an X-ray Free Electron Laser (X-ray Free Electron Laser: XFEL). This XFEL makes it possible to observe instantaneous atomic and molecular motion.

How SACLA Works

SACLA has an elongated structure with a total length of 700 m, consisting of the accelerator building (electron gun), light source building, and experimental research building (data analysis).

Electrons generated by the electron gun in the accelerator building are accelerated to a maximum of 8 GeV (8 billion electron volts) by the 400 m long accelerator. In the 240 m long light source building, a 100 m vacuum-sealed undulator precisely oscillates the electrons repeatedly to generate X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). This XFEL is 1 billion times brighter than SPring-8 and has the world's shortest wavelength. The XFEL thus generated is processed at the entrance hutch of the experimental research building and used for various experiments in the downstream experimental hutches.
